Yesterday, sometime around noon, I was walking down the street and came upon an accident that had just happened.
Black guy driving an SUV hit an old white station wagon driven by a white woman.
As I’m walking I hear a woman say, “that’s the driver, the African American”.
How did she know he was an American? Was he a friend of hers? Is he a famous American black man that is easily recognized?
Or does the black woman who identified him as an American assume that all men with dark skin are Americans?
My assumptions, based his looks, dress, actions and vehicle, were that he was a Jamaican on vacation in American driving a rented SUV. He was definitely a black guy, but American? I wouldn’t jump to that conclusion.
